GRIFFINS UNABLE TO RIGHT THE SHIP IN MILWAUKEE

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Admirals capitalized on all three of their power play opportunities on Monday, taking a 5-2 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins at the Bradley Center.

Despite the loss in their 100th meeting with Milwaukee, Grand Rapids owns an overall record of 48-36-7-5-4 (W-L-T-OTL-SOL) against the Admirals, however the Griffins have been unable to muster a win at the Bradley Center since December 2, 2007.

The Griffins will welcome the Hamilton Bulldogs to Van Andel Arena on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. face off in their 13th annual New Year’s Eve Extravaganza.

In the first period, Milwaukee (17-10-1-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals that came just 2:10 apart. After Andy Delmore was whistled off for interference at 8:33, the Griffins caught a bad bounce when Mike Santorelli’s pass from the point that was deflected to an uncovered Peter Olvecky, who tapped the puck in to a wide open net from the right doorstep at 10:19.

Milwaukee’s second goal came at the 12:29 mark when Chris Mueller caught Alexander Sulzer’s outlet pass in the neutral zone, and walked in on Tomas McCollum to beat him on a clear-cut breakaway.

Grand Rapids (18-15-0-1) came out with a strong start in the middle frame, but Milwaukee caught a quick break at 4:36 when Triston Grant dangled across the goal mouth, and scored from the top of the crease to give his team a 3-0 lead. The Admirals struck again at 6:50 with their second power play goal of the night. From the right point, Sulzer unleashed a bullet that snuck through a heavily screened McCollum.

Following Milwaukee’s fourth goal, Daniel Larsson entered the game to relieve McCollum, who stopped 13 of the 17 shots he faced.

Before the period expired, the Griffins climbed to within two of the Admirals, starting with Francis Pare’s unassisted goal at the 8:57 mark. In a two-on-one rush, Pare entered the zone on the left wing and beat Mark Dekanich with a wrist shot on the short side. Then, at 15:20, Ryan Stokes took a slap shot from the left point that John Vigilante tipped in to the net from the respective side of the crease, making the score 4-2.

In the third period, Milwaukee struck again when Ben Guite took a pass from Santorelli for a goal at 8:26, finalizing a 5-2 game.

Larsson made seven saves for Grand Rapids, and Dekanich stopped 16 shots in the win for Milwaukee.

Three Stars: 1. MIL Santorelli (3 assists); 2. MIL Guite (1 goal, 2 assists); 3. MIL Sulzer (1 goal, 1 assist).
