MAKING THE CUT

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Tuesday signed defenseman Jon Insana to a professional tryout; signed forward Patrick Jarrett to an amateur tryout; signed defenseman Nick Martens and forwards Brad Bonello and Ryan Keller to two-way contracts with ECHL Stockton, ECHL Toledo and UHL Muskegon, respectively; and released right wing Ryan Barnes.

Insana, 25, begins his fourth pro season overall and his second with the Griffins. Last season, he notched one assist in eight games with Grand Rapids and 21 points (9-12—21) in 64 games with Muskegon, helping the Fury capture their second straight UHL championship.

Jarrett, 21, enjoyed a standout season in the Ontario Hockey League in 2004-05, registering 27 goals and 76 points (27-49—76) in 68 games with Owen Sound. He was a fifth-round pick of the Nashville Predators in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Martens, 23, embarks on his rookie campaign following a four-year career at the University of Michigan. A native of Ann Arbor, he tallied 11 points (1-10—11) in 38 contests with the Wolverines last season.

Bonello, 21, experienced a breakout season with OHL Ottawa last year, posting career-highs with 26 goals, 40 assists and 66 points, while being whistled for 120 penalty minutes.

Keller, 21, scored more goals last season than any other player on the Griffins’ current roster. During his final major junior campaign with Saskatoon of the Western Hockey League, he contributed 40 goals and 73 points (40-33—73) in 67 outings.

Barnes, 25, spent the majority of the last three seasons with the Griffins, contributing 45 points (18-27—45) and 493 PIM in 211 games.

With a roster now 26 players strong, Grand Rapids will commence its tenth season at Van Andel Arena this Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. versus the Milwaukee Admirals. 10th Anniversary Opening Night presented by Comcast will feature performances by Claude, The Happy Trumpeter and intermission entertainment by the Gentleman Jugglers. The first 3,000 fans will receive a 10th Anniversary commemorative poster.
