GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Thanks to the Pittsburgh Penguins' 4-games-to-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks in the Stanley Cup Finals, center Kevin Porter will become the 16th former member of the Grand Rapids Griffins to have his name engraved on the most famous trophy in sports.
Porter, who scored 39 points (16-23--39) in 76 games for the Griffins in 2014-15, earned the honor by appearing in 41 regular season games with the Penguins before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.
Overall, he will be the 29th Griffins player to have his name engraved on the Cup at some point during his career. The names of Griffins alums have been added to the Cup in six of the last nine years and in eight of the last 12 seasons, with 2015 (Chicago), 2014 (Los Angeles), 2012 (Los Angeles) and 2007 (Anaheim) being the only exceptions during that span. In addition, former Griffins assistant coach Jim Paek (2005-14) won a pair of Cups as a defenseman for Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992.
